Christmas season has officially arrived! But I’m sure you don’t need a reminder. Everywhere you look the magic of the day is pushed unto us making it almost impossible to ignore. From the glorious lights now adorning our once dull and mundane neighbourhood streets to the never-ending timeless holiday classics terrorizing us with Christmas cheer. After the trying year we’ve had I think we all need and cherish the child-like excitement we used to have for Christmas day. The anticipation of opening those long sought for gifts, digging in too your succulent Christmas dinners and reuniting with your beloved family members and loved ones to make sweet memories to look back on.
Christmas is truly the most wonderful time of the year as it allows us to slow down and enjoy the present before being thrust into the frenzy of the new year. As we approach the end of the year it’s important to reflect on our performance and ways we can self-improve. The vast majority of us have already started mentally drafting our new year resolutions and have a clear list of aspirations and targets we want to hit for 2022. However, in areas regarding moving jobs or accelerating your career, many of us remain stagnant due to a fear of the unknown.
Did you know ‘British employees will averagely work for 34 hours and 26 minutes a week, adding up to a total of 1,795 hours a year, and 84,365 hours over a lifetime’. When I see those figures I can confidently say that we spend way too much time at work to not feel like we’re getting the most out of it especially when there are tons of job roles to apply for and services that specialise in aiding you in finding your best fit. As you enter into the New Year do you really want to be stuck in your tedious lifestyle. Waking up and commuting to a job you neither enjoy or are getting adequately paid for. If you fit into this bracket, contrary to popular belief, now is a great time to start looking for a new job. companies are still hiring, irrespectively of the holiday season and it’s wise to get ahead of January jobseekers.
As stated before, it’s a myth that companies do not hire over the holidays. In fact in the months leading up to Halloween and Christmas there are range of jobs becoming available, August’s CBI labour market update reported that more people are in work than ever before and opportunities continue to remain at a high level. With Christmas on the way, a fantastic reason for a change is the bonuses it may bring. Due to the sheer amount of customer demand around the time, and the need for many employees to require time off for family commitments etc. You could be entitled to a range of holiday bonuses such as a higher pay rate for unsociable hours, or working days such as Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year Day when businesses are at their busiest.
Many people do not know this, but we’ll let you in on a little secret. A number of organisations finalise their year’s budget during December, they will use this time to set aside a budget for future vacancies. Often, during this process a lot of organisations come across money that they will need to spend, or risk losing it and having their budgets cut for the following year. In a lot of cases, this means hiring new staff members before January, this can only be a winning situation for you!
A good reason to consider changing jobs in the holidays is that due to the stigma around holiday job hunting there will be less competition. It can be hard to manage a job search when there are so many other things happening during the holidays. For some people, it’s easier to focus on the season than the job hunt. That’s fine, of course, but if you’re a juggler who can multi-task, you’ll find less competition for jobs. Keeping your job search going could give you a chance for an interview that you may not have got during another time of year. That’s because the candidate pool was more competitive during another time of year. It’s also a good idea to keep your job search organized. Keeping your job search organized will help you manage multiple priorities.
You couldn’t pick a better time of year for networking. There are many social and business holiday functions during November and December when you can connect with people who can help your job search. Don’t be shy. Most people are thrilled to have the opportunity to pay it forward by helping you out, especially during the season of giving.
