HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR EYES EVERY DAY

Industry Insight

We use our eyes from the moment we wake up until we go to sleep. Whether we’re working at a computer, checking our phones, driving or watching television, our eyes are constantly working.

While some eye problems are unavoidable, there are simple everyday habits that can help you look after your eyes and maintain comfortable, healthy vision.

1. Give Your Eyes Regular Breaks

If you spend a lot of time looking at a computer, tablet or phone, remember to take regular breaks.

Extended periods of close-up screen use can contribute to tired and uncomfortable eyes.

Try looking away from your screen regularly and focusing on something further away.

2. Remember To Blink

It sounds simple, but blinking is important.

When concentrating on a screen, we can sometimes blink less frequently. This can contribute to dry or uncomfortable eyes.

Making a conscious effort to blink regularly can help keep the surface of your eyes comfortable.

3. Wear Sunglasses

Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion accessory.

Good-quality sunglasses can help protect your eyes from bright sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

When choosing sunglasses, look for a pair that provides appropriate UV protection and fits comfortably.

4. Keep Your Contact Lenses Clean

If you wear contact lenses, good hygiene is essential.

Always follow the cleaning, wearing and replacement instructions provided by your optometrist or contact lens professional.

Never use water to clean or store contact lenses, and make sure your hands are clean before handling them.

5. Eat A Balanced Diet

A healthy, balanced diet provides your body with the nutrients it needs — including nutrients that support normal eye function.

Try to include a variety of fruit and vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains, fish and other nutritious foods as part of your regular diet.

6. Don’t Ignore Changes In Your Vision

Changes in your eyesight shouldn’t simply be put down to getting older or being tired.

If you’ve noticed persistent blurred vision, flashes, new floaters, changes in your peripheral vision or other unusual symptoms, speak to an eye-care professional.

Some sudden changes in vision require urgent assessment.

7. Keep Your Eye Tests Up To Date

One of the simplest ways to look after your eyes is to have regular eye examinations.

An eye test can check whether your prescription needs updating and can also assess the health of your eyes.

Even if you feel that your vision hasn’t changed, regular examinations can help identify problems that you may not have noticed yourself.

Small Changes Can Make A Difference

Looking after your eyes doesn’t have to be complicated.

Taking regular screen breaks, wearing appropriate sunglasses, practising good contact lens hygiene, eating a balanced diet and keeping up with your eye examinations can all form part of a healthy approach to looking after your vision.
